The case
You've been asked by the Head of People at Revolut to solve two problems:
- Reduce the time to hire for backend developers
- Increase the hire conversion rate for backend developers
You have 30 minutes to work through this problem. The interviewer has data, but will only reveal it if you ask the right questions. If your question is irrelevant or off-track, they'll say "I don't have data for that."
Your task
Structure your approach and identify what's causing these problems.
The framework: MECE
For problem-solving cases like this, I used the MECE framework — Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive. It helps you break a complex problem into distinct categories that don't overlap but still cover everything.
For this hiring problem, I created three main buckets:
- 1System — hiring tools, process bottlenecks
- 2Internal — interviewers, paperwork, scheduling
- 3External — competitors, salary, market
The key is asking targeted questions within each bucket to reveal where the problems actually are.
The trap
Most candidates waste time on the wrong questions or miss a critical element entirely. There's a specific trap in this case about timeline assumptions that derails candidates who don't structure their approach properly.
